Enjoy the solid comfort of the massive log construction and stone fireplace in this historic home built between 1785 – 1812. Make sure you read the full entry from Garland Quarles’ book: Some Interesting Homes of Frederick County, Virginia (1971). It has been updated, but the exposed log settles you deeply into the original ambiance of days long gone.
Excerptfrom Quarles' book:
“This house stands on lot number 61 in the original plan for the Town of Stephensburg. On April 2, 1785, John Emmett conveyed the lot to Henry Lewis and on October 5, 1812 the heirs of Henry Lewis conveyed it to John Samsell. The price paid by Samsell would seem to indicate that the house we are considering had already been built by 1812….”
Directions: From Interstate 81, take the Stephens City exit (307), west to the first right (North) – Mulberry Street to the house at Mulberry and Locust. From Rte 11 (Main Street in Stephens City), just North of the intersection of Main and Route 277 turn east on Locust Street. The house sits on the southeast corner of Locust and Mulberry.
