Between 1851 and 1863 William Cather and his wife, Emily Ann Caroline Smith, assembled the farm that became Willow Shade. They built the main house about 1853. They were the parent of seven children, including Charles, father of Will Cather. Born Wilella Cather, in 1873, lived in the house from 1877 until 1883 when the family moved to Nebraska. She later used “Willa” as her name. The house was placed on the National of Historic Places in 1991 after a significant renovation.
